Defining Possible at Sea

Northrop Grumman: Leader in Integrated, Advanced Naval Systems

Northrop Grumman’s seabed-to-space advanced multi-domain maritime capabilities enable current and future maritime missions. With systems and sensors fielded on VIRGINIA class submarines, Arleigh–Burke class destroyers, E2D Hawkeye, Triton, and space-based assets, all connected by cyber secure communications and networks, Northrop Grumman is positioned to fully operationalize the Navy’s Project Overmatch and Distributed Maritime Operations (DMO) strategy.

A Legacy of Integrated Bridge & Navigation Systems

Northrop Grumman’s navigation technology provides optimal situational awareness for ship watch officers in carrying out their missions. Multifunctional workstations are available to combine all nautical factors with a further option for integration specific military applications and other ship system operations, thereby increasing the level of safety and enabling full flexibility for data access anywhere on the bridge.

WSN-7/12

The WSN-7 is an inertial navigator, a device that allows for precise navigation and aiming of weapons. It allows our ships and submarines to operate in areas where GPS is denied. Currently, there is a WSN-7 on nearly every ship in the U.S. Navy Fleet.

The WSN-12 Inertial Navigation System is more precise than the WSN-7 and will be crucial to establishing true A-PNT (assured position, navigation, and timing), critical for long range weaponry. The WSN-12 is scheduled for Fleet deployment beginning in late 2022.

Northrop Grumman: Leader in Integration

DDG(X)

Northrop Grumman is developing sensors and systems that can be integrated seamlessly on next generation platforms like DDG(X).

Power & Energy: Integrated Power Solution (IPS)

Scalable energy storage and management systems are increasingly important for modern naval warfare. Northrop Grumman’s integrated power and energy systems are ideal for supporting current and emerging systems such as electromagnetic sensors, directed energy weapons, and radars.

Northrop Grumman’s IPS is both flexible and adaptable – utilizing modular technologies to enable rapid, affordable upgrades on the DDG(X) platform. Our experience with machinery controls, integrated power systems, energy management, and shipboard electrical systems make Northrop Grumman an ideal partner for the shipyard to help with electric plant control design and support the shipyard’s role as an IPS Integrator.

Machinery Control & Steering Systems

Machinery Control System & Steering Systems are sophisticated control system solutions for surface ships and submarines. The Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS), sometimes referred to as a Machinery Control System, is a sophisticated control system solution for naval vessels including surface ships, submarines and, potentially, uncrewed surface and undersea vehicles.

These systems control and monitor platform machines, steering and on-board systems, and are comprised of sensors, actuators, remote terminal units and data processing to provide safe, secure, condition-based control, monitoring, steering and diagnostics on the status of a ship and its major systems.

Northrop Grumman: Leader in Uncrewed Systems

From unmanned aerial vehicles and underwater mine hunting systems to defense readiness targets, Northrop Grumman is a leader in autonomous systems, helping our customers meet a wide range of missions.

Northrop Grumman is a leader in the areas of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and we are working to develop autonomous capabilities and intelligent payloads for maritime applications, like the Large Unmanned Surface Vehicle and Medium Unmanned Surface Vehicles.

Manta Ray

Northrop Grumman has been pioneering new capabilities in the undersea domain for more than 50 years. Manta Ray, a new unmanned underwater vehicle, taking its name from the massive “winged” fish, will need to be able to operate on long-duration, long-range missions in ocean environments without need for on-site human logistics support – a unique but important mission needed to address the complex nature of undersea warfare.

Northrop Grumman is developing its unique full-scale demonstration vehicle using several novel design attributes that support the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA’s) vision of providing ground-breaking technology to create strategic surprise. Manta Ray will also be able to anchor to the seafloor in a low power state while harvesting energy from the environment.

AQS-24B Minehunting

Northrop Grumman was the first to field electro-optic mine identification and developed the first long-range synthetic aperture sonar for mine warfare, the first mine warfare unmanned surface vessel (jointly with the Naval Undersea Warfare Center) and mine warfare unmanned underwater vehicles. It is currently the fastest fielded minehunting system in the world.
